Setting boundaries

Recovery sometimes means saying no to people or situations. That's not selfish, it's self-care.

A boundary shows what is and isn't okay for you. For example: I won't come to parties where people are using. Or: I don't want alcohol in the house. Or: I don't answer the phone after ten at night.

Setting boundaries is hard, especially if you're used to pleasing others or you feel guilty. But without boundaries you keep ending up in situations that put your recovery at risk.

State a boundary calmly and clearly, using I. You don't need to defend yourself. People who mean well will respect it, even if they find it strange at first.

You can also set boundaries for yourself, like no longer biking past your old bar.
