What to do with boredom

Boredom is one of the biggest triggers. The substance filled your time. Now there's suddenly space.

When you stop, you notice how much time the substance took up. Buying it, using it, recovering from it. That time is suddenly free, and it can feel empty. Boredom makes cravings stronger, because your brain looks for something with a quick reward.

It helps to fill your days with a rhythm. Fixed times for getting up, eating, moving and sleeping. Plan something concrete for the difficult hours: a walk, cooking, a chore, calling someone.

Try new things too. A class, volunteering, a sport, an instrument or a garden. You won't like everything, and that's fine. You're looking for what gives you energy.

Boredom passes too. After a while ordinary things feel more enjoyable again, because your brain recovers.
