Ingrid, 67

A new beginning after retirement

Then

After she retired, Ingrid suddenly had all the time in the world. Happy hour started earlier and earlier, first at five, later at three. Once she fell in the bathroom and got a black eye. She told her children she had tripped over the rug.

The turning point

Her granddaughter asked if grandma wanted to come watch her swimming lesson, at four o'clock. Ingrid knew she would have been drinking by then. She said no, and felt ashamed all afternoon. The next day she called her doctor.

Now

Ingrid has been alcohol-free for two years. She swims herself now, twice a week, and sings in a choir. Every week she watches her granddaughter's swimming lesson. She says: I never thought I could blossom like this at my age.

“Structure in your day protects you, especially when you have a lot of free time.”
