Ruben, 38

From the bar to the marathon

Then

Ruben drank every night. First two beers after work, later a bottle of wine and whatever else was in the cupboard. His six-year-old daughter asked why daddy was always so tired. One Saturday morning he woke up in his car outside the house. He had no idea how he had gotten home.

The turning point

That morning he saw the dent in the bumper. Nobody was hurt, but it could have ended so differently. He called his doctor that same day and said it out loud: I drink too much and I can't stop. The first weeks were hard. He slept badly, was irritable and thought about beer every evening at six.

Now

Ruben has been alcohol-free for four years. He started running because he needed something to do with his restlessness in the evening. Last year he ran his first marathon. His daughter stood at the finish with a homemade sign. He says: I didn't get stronger. I got more honest.

“Saying out loud what was going on was the first step. Everything else came after that.”
