Why the first days are the hardest

The first week is often the hardest. That isn't a sign it's not working. It's a sign your body is adjusting.

When you stop something you've used for a long time, your body has to find a new balance. You might sleep badly, feel restless, sweat, get headaches or be easily irritated. With behaviors like gambling or gaming you mostly feel restlessness and boredom.

These symptoms are strongest in the first days and then fade. For most people the worst is over after a week. Your mind may keep saying for a while that once won't hurt. That's the addiction talking, not you.

Important: if you drank a lot every day, or used sleeping pills or tranquilizers, don't stop suddenly on your own. Withdrawal can be dangerous. Call your doctor, who can help you taper off safely.

Make the first days as easy as possible. Remove everything from your home, plan quiet days, eat well and tell someone what you're doing.
