Parties and birthdays

Social events are often tricky at first. With a good plan you can still enjoy them.

At a birthday or party, drinks are often the center of things. You see others drinking, you get offered something and you may feel like the odd one out. It's normal to dread that.

Make a plan before you go. Bring your own drink. Decide what time you'll leave. Bring someone who knows you've stopped. Make sure you have your own ride, so you can always leave.

In the first weeks it's also fine to say no to a party. That's not failure, that's protecting yourself. Instead, meet the birthday person separately, during the day or on a walk.

Many people discover they enjoy things more sober. You remember the conversations and wake up fresh the next morning.
