HALT: hungry, angry, lonely, tired
Four ordinary feelings make cravings much stronger. If you recognize them, you can do something about them.
HALT stands for Hungry, Angry, Lonely and Tired. These are four states in which you're more vulnerable. Your body and mind look for a quick fix, and the substance used to be very good at that.
Many people notice that cravings are strongest in the late afternoon. That's often exactly when you're tired and hungry. The craving then isn't really about the substance, but about your blood sugar and your energy.
When a craving hits, ask yourself the four questions. Am I hungry? Am I angry? Do I feel lonely? Am I tired? Often the answer is yes to one or two of them. Then you know what you really need: food, letting off steam, connection or rest.
In the app you can do a HALT check. You'll get concrete advice for each signal.
