Sleeping without it

Poor sleep is part of the first weeks. It gets better, and you can help it along.

Many people used to fall asleep. Alcohol and cannabis may help you drift off, but they disrupt your deep sleep and dream sleep. You wake up less rested, even if you slept long.

When you stop, your body has to learn to sleep without help again. In the first weeks you may lie awake, wake up often or have vivid dreams. That's normal and it passes. After a few weeks most people sleep better than they have in years.

What helps: getting up at the same time every day, weekends included. Going outside and moving during the day. No coffee after noon. No screens for an hour before bed. A cool, dark bedroom.

Awake for more than twenty minutes? Get up for a bit, do something calm in dim light and go back when you're sleepy. Worrying in bed makes it worse.

Try todayPick a fixed wake-up time today and stick to it for a week.
